Coverage for Individuals

Professional liability insurance (also known as malpractice insurance) provides coverage that protects nurse practitioners from claims of negligence, errors, or omissions arising from patient care. CM&F malpractice policies are built specifically for nurse practitioners and their unique risk exposure, often including specialized coverage designed to address the realities of NP practice.

When comparing policy coverage, it’s important to understand that employer-provided coverage is designed to protect the organization, while individual NP coverage is designed to protect the nurse practitioner. Individual coverage helps ensure your personal assets and professional reputation are protected if a claim is ever filed.

Coverage for Groups

CM&F group professional liability insurance for nurse practitioner practices protects your practice’s financial stability and reputation should claims arise from patient care.

When it comes to professional liability insurance protection, group coverage is designed to protect the practice entity, while individual coverage protects each nurse practitioner.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does nurse practitioner professional liability insurance cover?

Nurse practitioner professional liability insurance covers claims arising from patient care, including allegations of negligence, errors, or omissions. Coverage typically includes legal defense, settlements or judgments, and may extend to regulatory actions, license defense, and certain patient injury and/or property claims, depending on the policy terms.

Do nurse practitioners need their own malpractice insurance if covered by an employer?

Employer-provided malpractice insurance is designed to protect the healthcare organization, not the individual nurse practitioner. Individual professional liability insurance provides coverage that helps protect the NP’s personal assets and professional reputation if a claim is filed.

What is the difference between occurrence and claims-made coverage for nurse practitioners?

Occurrence coverage applies to incidents that happen during the policy period, regardless of when the claim is filed. Claims-made coverage applies only when both the incident and the claim occur while the policy is active, unless extended reporting coverage is in place.

What are professional liability coverage limits for nurse practitioners?

Professional liability coverage limits define how much a policy will pay for claims. Per occurrence limits apply to a single claim, while aggregate limits define the total amount payable for all claims within the policy period.

What factors affect the cost of malpractice insurance for nurse practitioners?

The cost of nurse practitioner malpractice insurance is based on specialty, scope of practice, geographic location, selected coverage limits, and claims history. Higher-risk specialties and higher coverage limits typically result in higher premiums.

Does malpractice insurance cover telehealth services for nurse practitioners?

Malpractice insurance may include coverage for telehealth services when those services fall within the nurse practitioner’s licensed scope of practice and comply with applicable regulations and policy terms.

Are discounts available for new nurse practitioners?

Malpractice insurance policies may offer discounts for nurse practitioners who are new to practice, including recent graduates, helping reduce the cost of coverage during the early stages of their careers.

How does a malpractice claim work for a nurse practitioner?

A malpractice claim begins when a patient alleges negligence, an error, or an omission in care. Once a claim is reported, the professional liability insurance policy provides access to legal defense and manages the claims process on behalf of the nurse practitioner. The insurer investigates the claim, appoints defense counsel, and covers legal costs, settlements, or judgments, subject to the policy’s terms and coverage limits.
